LONDON, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- A study by academics reveals Tuesday a tale of two Englands, with hundreds of thousands of northerners dying prematurely compared to their southern England cousins.


Research, led by the University of Manchester, says dying early is 20 percent more likely in the north compared to the south of England.


Academic researchers say there were 14 Nike Air Max TN Nere Scontate ,333 more premature deaths in the north in 2015, but the most staggering statistics is that between 1965 and 2015, around 1.2 million northerners died prematurely.


"The study uncovers a North-South divide in deaths among middle aged adults, which has been rising since the mid-90s and is now at alarming levels," said the report.


It also reveals that there were 49 percent more deaths among 35-44 year olds in the north in 2015 compared to the south Nike Air Max TN Nere , and 29 percent more deaths among northerners aged 25 to 34.

The project was supported by the Health eResearch Center at the University of Manchester, and funded through a consortium of ten partners5 led by the Medical Research Council (MRC).


Lead researcher, Professor Iain Buchan from the University of Manchester said: "Five decades of death records tell a tale of two Englands www.niketnnere.it , north and south, divided by resources and life expectancy, a profound inequality resistant to the public health interventions of successive governments."


"A new approach is required, one that must address the economic and social factors that underpin early deaths, especially in younger populations Scarpe Air Max TN Scontate , and one that focuses on rebalancing the wider economy to help drive investment in northern towns and cities.


"The devolution of centralized powers may enable civic leaders to seed the economic growth to tackle this divide, but only if they are given the proportionate northern weighting of funds to do so."


The study has been published in the latest edition of the BMJ's Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health and raises questions, say the researchers, over the effectiveness of government policies and billions of dollars of public investment designed to tackle the problem.

LONDON, July 17 (Xinhua) -- The first major contracts for Britain's biggest ever rail project Nike Air Max TN Scontate , worth 8.7 billion U.S. dollars, were announced Monday by Transport Secretary Chris Grayling.


The high-speed HS2 rail will eventually link London with central and northern England, with the total cost currently said to be around 74 billion U.S. dollars.


Grayling said the first major infrastructure contracts will cover the main civil engineering work on the first phase of HS2 between London and Birmingham. The work includes the construction of tunnels, bridges, embankments and viaducts.


The first phase between London and Birmingham is scheduled to open in 2026 Air Max TN Scontate , with phase two to Manchester in the north-west and Leeds in the north-east due for completion in 2033.


Grayling said: "This is a hugely important step in the construction of Britain's new railway. HS2 will deliver vital links between some of our country's biggest cities, helping to drive economic growth and productivity in the north and midlands."


David Higgins, chairman of HS2 Ltd, said: "This is a huge day for the HS2 project and for the country. These contracts will support 16,000 jobs in Britain and will create opportunities for thousands of SMEs."

HS2 has divided opinion in Britain with environmental groups and some politicians calling for it to be scrapped altogether.
